How To Size an Outdoor Lantern
One of the most common challenges of selecting outdoor lighting is choosing the right-sized outdoor lantern. The height of the door should determine the height of a lantern. If only one lantern will be installed on one side of the door, the height must be approximately one-third of the height of the door. If two lanterns are mounted on either side of the door, the lanterns should be approximately one-fourth of the height of the door. Whether you prefer one or two lanterns it is imperative that you measure appropriately as a fixture with a long tail or top scroll should approximately be one-half the visual height of the door.
The Outdoor Lanterns (top right) are part of the Murray Feiss Cotswold Lane Collection.
When mounting a lantern the filament of the bulb should approximately 66" above the threshold of the door. Once the outlet box location has been established, different mounting arms (on the top or bottom) can be selected to place the filament properly.
You should never undersize your lanterns - always keep in mind that lanterns tend to appear about half their size from 50 feet away. Envision the front of your home from the perspective of your guests and neighbors as they view it from the street, and when in doubt, the sensible thing to do would be to simply go larger.
