PLANNING AN OUTDOOR PARTY?

ELK LightingThe weather is now nice and warm and Outdoor lighting enhances the overall beauty of your home. Front entrance lighting , as well as overall outdoor lighting is the first thing that welcomes your guests as they approach your home. It is the first I impression of your home. It is important to take extra time in selecting the proper light and style for both visual appeal and security.

Wall lanterns and chain hung lanterns will give your home a warm, welcoming look, while assuring the safety of your guests and family. They can also set the right mood for relaxation and outdoor entertaining.

Plan on using pier mounts or post lights near driveways and walkways.

ELK-LightingEnergy Saving Outdoor Lighting Tips

Several outdoor fixtures from ELK in the Barrington Gate collection have been certified Energy Star products.

LED-Long lasting bulbs with energy savings greater than compact fluorescent bulbs

Compact Fluorescent (CFL) - Readily available, uses existing fixture's sockets, more efficient than incandescent bulbs. Exterior lighting is one of the best places to use CFLs because of their long life. If you live in a cold climate buy a lamp with a cold weather ballast since standard CFLs may not work well below 40*F.

Lights powered by small Photovoltaic (PV) modules that convert sunlight directly into electricity. Consider PV-powered lights for areas that are not near an existing power supply line.

Outdoor lights with a photocell unit and motion sensor will turn on only at night or when someone is present.

For outdoor lighting and lanterns, the LightingGuru recommends ELK Outdoor Lighting. Great styles from a great quality brand.

Posted by Gavin Martin on Fri, May 14, 2010

Elk Outdoor LightingOutdoor lighting enhances the beauty of your property, makes your home safer and more secure, and increases the number of pleasurable hours you spend outdoors

You can add wall lanterns on both sides of your front door approximately 66 inches above the bottom of the door, slightly above eye level. The height of the wall lanterns should be from 1/5 to 1/6 of the entrance height.

Use a single wall lantern on other entrances to the house mounted on the keyhole side of the door.

You may use a chain hung lantern mounted over the front door beneath an overhang for added light.

Keep you pathways well lit with lanterns mounted every 8 - 10 feet for safety.

You can add a post light near driveways and walkways for added illumination and security.

The LightingGuru recommends ELK Wall lanterns and ELK Outdoor Lighting. ELK Lighting provides Lighting for Distinctive Homes.

How to Size an Outdoor Wall Lantern

Posted by Gavin Martin on Thu, August 27, 2009

Hinkley Outdoor LanternsFor those early dark fall and winter nights outdoor lighting is very important as you come home. Outdoor lighting provides entrance lighting, security, and a great way to accent your home's style and show it off. One of the toughest challenges of outdoor lighting is mounting the outdoor lantern at the appropriate height for the entrance door or garage lighting. The height of an outdoor lantern should be based on the height of the door. Selecting the right-sized outdoor lantern can sometimes pose a challenge, but if you follow these sizing guidelines your fit will be just right.

Sizing 1 lanternFOR 1 LANTERN: The height of a lantern should be based on the height of the door. If you place a lantern on only one side of the door, it should measure one-third the height of the door. The center of the bulb should rest 66" above the threshold of the door.

Sizing 2 Lanterns

FOR 2 LANTERNS: When two lanterns are used on either side of the door, they should each measure approximately one-fourth the height of the door. The center of the bulb should rest 66" above the threshold of the door.

TIP: In either case, if you choose a fixture with a long tail or top scroll, pay attention to the overall bulk of the fixture.

DON'T UNDERSIZE YOUR LANTERNS: As a rule of thumb, your lantern should appear to be about half the size of your door from 50' away. Visualize the front of your home as guests and neighbors would view it from the street.  When in doubt, always go larger.
